Do you accept insurance?

We are considered an out-of-network provider. We encourage all clients to check with their insurance provider before scheduling your first appointment to find out the details regarding your specific benefits for your plan.

What is paying out-of-pocket?

Choosing to pay out-of-pocket for your services provides us the freedom to explore your concerns without interference from an insurance company. It allows us to work together without the need for a mental health diagnosis and medical necessity.  It also provides you with more control over the type of care you receive and more flexibility in the work we do together.

Another benefit of paying privately for your services is that you are empowered to choose the therapist that’s the right fit for you and your needs, not just a therapist that accepts your insurance.  This is an important variable to consider when seeking support.

What are out-of-network benefits?

It’s important to understand that in order to be eligible for reimbursement for counseling services through your insurance company, you will need to have a diagnosed mental health disorder. This applies to all therapy services. We can provide you with a monthly document called a Superbill, which you will submit for reimbursement. Note that a mental health diagnosis will be required whether we believe there to be one or not (see our About US page regarding are approach to therapy for more details). If you want to simplify the process of being reimbursed, you may want to consider using the service ReImbursify.

What's a Superbill?

Many health insurance companies include out of network benefits for members.  This means you pay for your counseling services at the time of service and then submit a document called a Superbill (generated monthly) to your insurance company for reimbursement.  A Superbill provides date of service, proof of payment, and required diagnostic and service codes.

EXAMPLE: Let’s say your insurance reimburses 80% for an out of network counseling session once the deductible is met.  You would pay $120 at the time of service and your out of network benefit would reimburse $96, this would be paid directly to you by your insurance, leaving the actual cost to you at $24 per session.

What are my payment options?

Payment is accepted in the form of cash, check, or credit card including HSA cards. You are responsible for full payment at the time of services regardless of Out-of-Network benefits.

Is couples counseling for me?

One of the most rewarding, rich, life giving, and societally beneficial relationships is that of marriage and committed couple relationships.

Unfortunately, too many marriages are either failing or sustained in a state of apathy, dissatisfaction, discouragement, and at times – despair.

Maybe your relationship is not that “bad” and you just know it can be better and is in a less than optimal state.

If you and your partner struggle with any of these, then yes, couples counseling can help - we view them as an opportunity to help you build a stronger and more vibrant bond and relationship.

What couples-related issues can't Stronghouse help with?

Whatever your relationship needs and challenges - we view them as an opportunity to help you build a stronger and more vibrant bond and relationship. However, we cannot help in all situations.

These are the situations in which we cannot help:

1. If there is active alcohol and/or drug addiction on the part of either or both partners, from either partner’s perspective and the partner/couple is not willing to seek treatment & have treatment be a part of couples counseling.

2. If there is  violence in the relationship, threats by one or both partners that violence might occur, or if there is fear of such violence from both or either partner.

3. If either partner currently has an untreated major mental illness (i.e. schizophrenia, recurrent psychotic depression, or bipolar/manic-depressive illness, ) Note: This does not include past, successfully treated psychotic episodes (e.g. post-partum depression with psychosis).

4. If there is an undisclosed, current affair that you are not willing to disclose (per research this predicts couples therapy failure).

5. If there is an ongoing affair and the partner having the affair is not willing to end it.

6. If either partner is experiencing suicidal or homicidal thoughts, or has a history of serious harm inflicted on him/herself or another person.

Is individual counseling for me?

Those who struggle with anxiety.
You try to go to sleep at night, but the worried thoughts just keep coming. Throughout the day an endless stream of thoughts seems to steal the moment. Your mind jumps from one thing to the next. As soon as you solve one problem another one pops quickly into your head. You feel distracted, irritable, exhausted. Your mind feels like a worry factory. This causes you to be short with your kids, perform poorly at work or just generally feel like you are not thriving but merely surviving. Why can’t I just stop thinking about all these things? Why does my brain tend to torture me with these catastrophic thoughts?

Those who struggle with depression.
Depression can be debilitating.  It can cause feelings of helplessness, defeat, and despair – at times it can breed thoughts that you don’t want, never dreamed you would or could have, and that can be scary. Intrusive thoughts about one being worthless, life being meaningless, or that nothing will ever change are some of these unsettling thoughts.

The thoughts above are characteristic of a more severe depression. Yet depression can manifest itself in milder forms – milder does not mean free from impact – whether that impact be personal, interpersonal, or related to work, home life, or societal circumstances. Maybe you find yourself less interested in activities you used to enjoy, have lower energy levels, an increase or decrease in appetite, or are having difficulty concentrating. These symptoms can be more mild or severe depending on the degree of depression. In mild and moderate forms of depression you are able to function, yet you may have lost your motivation and life may have lost its luster.

Do you offer virtual sessions (telehealth)?

Yes, we do!

We have met the requirements in the state of Ohio to provide telemental health services through use of phone and video sessions. You have a choice to receive in-person, phone, or virtual video appointments.

Our practice uses the HIPAA-compliant service, Therapy Notes, to provide video services. This can be used to facilitate our sessions if you are unable to come in person due to physical health, emergency situations, living within another area of Ohio, or simply due to personal preference.

Note: Before you decide to engage in telemental health services, it is important we make you aware of the benefits and limitations of this service, though this is not an exhaustive list.

Benefits to telemental health sessions may include – a more flexible schedule, a familiar setting that may increase vulnerability, convenience, time saved by not commuting, and the decrease in fears of seeing someone you know at the office.

Some limitations include technology glitches, slow internet, low resolution, or dropped calls. At a deeper therapeutic level there are concerns about the efficacy of online therapy as this has not been studied long term. In person therapy allows for a multi-dimensional connection; this multi-dimensional connection allows for fuller engagement of the senses, access to a variety of modalities and interventions, and allowance for a more thorough assessment and evaluation.

We are happy to accommodate any of the above approaches to therapy, and support you in the choice you make. Growth occurs in each type of therapy per our experience.

If you would like to engage in therapy through Telemental Health Services, please let us know during your intake call and we will guide you through the process.

What do I have to do in sessions?

Because each person has different issues and goals for counseling, it will be different depending on the individual/couple. We tailor our therapeutic approach to your specific needs. This is something we will talk through in the initial assessment.

How many counseling sessions will this process take?

Unfortunately, this is not possible to say in a general FAQs page. Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time counseling can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek counseling in the first place.

Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?

Not at all. People who ask for help know when they need it and have the courage to reach out. Everyone needs help now and then. In our work together, we will help you explore and identify your strengths and how to implement them to reduce the influence of the problems you are facing.

What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?

The difference is between someone who can do something, and someone who has the training and experience to do that same thing professionally. A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Furthermore, counseling is completely confidential. You won’t have to worry about others “knowing my business.” Lastly, if your situation provokes a great deal of negative emotion, and you’ve been confiding in a friend or family member, there is the risk that once you are feeling better you could start avoiding that person so you aren’t reminded of this difficult time in your life.

Why shouldn’t I just take medication?

Medication can be effective but it alone cannot solve all issues. Sometimes medication is needed in conjunction with counseling. Our work together is designed to explore and unpack the problems you are experiencing and expand on your strengths that can help you accomplish your personal goals.
